Somewhere Under Taroc: The Hidden Fortress of Alain LeCavalier

Prince Eri, Protector to the Heir of Rekōdo and his guards, Ganard of House Fallandor and Merelin of House Diorna

The Prince frowned at hearing Verona's words. His face was sternly set as it was, with the small telltale presence of a frown at the corners of his mouth. Stern, but reflective, thoughtful. The Book. Eri glances up at Alain sharply.

    "Darmon knew about the Book."

His voice is soft spoken and firm, but his stern, brown eyes lock with Alain's. Unless the Guild Master furthers the subject, he will say no more. His point of concern was clear: How did Darmon know of the Book of Memories in the Dragon's cave when none of them did? In the memory of Nalia al’Vatar- his mind was unfortunately keen on remembering things- the Dragonesses has said Darmon stole something precious of theirs. Nalia's memory had revealed that Darmon searched for the Book of Memories nearly a decade ago. It must be something terribly sacred that was stolen for the Dragonfolk to have come and take the Book from the heart of Rekōdo. Eri had seen very little of Darmon or any of the Guild Masters since he was a small boy. Only ever at select banquets or galas under the shadow of his ever-aging father and King. He could not remember anything terribly distinct of the man and that irritated him. There were too many things in this world that held magikal potential, and so many more that they knew so little about. The thing Darmon had taken from the Dragons could be anything. With grimness he thought it would be beneficial if Nalia of Enchantry was here. She might know the thing that the Dragons had spoken of. Ganard had come across the room now, to stand once again beside his prince and charge. His hand is on his sword as he exchanges a silent look with the Prince. The Prince then looks farther across the room toward Merelin.

But Merelin was otherwise occupied, so much so that she did not notice Doraen watching her. Her fingertips moved lightly, like the limbs of a spider or a pianist as they practiced their craft through finger-play. It was as if she were composing a great symphony over Arion's wounds, something the Second might have taken great curiosity in were he awake. Undoubtedly, there was a Song to her practice, if the craft itself was not reflected within her Soul's Song. But the young Second of Taroc was all but lifeless upon the table. His arms, what parts of them were not broken, hung loosely and at odd angles. His tall frame extended off the ledges of the pallet. His red hair spilled over like a crimson waterfall. It was hard to tell where blood stopped and locks began.

Merelin listens to what information Doraen offered on Arion. Her fingers move over the severely damaged areas and drew out contaminants, fragments, things that simply should not be within his system. Fibers of bones were stitched together slowly, slowly, as to be done with great care. Like anyone with a true, well-endowed source of healing magik, it was not squandered. Every heal was taken seriously and done delicately as lace embroidery by fancy noblewomen over tea and gossip.

"Sohil? So he is of Shamaa?"

There were disputes about whether the Wilderland Clans, if they remained, were of Shamaa or Taroc heritage. There was certainly a healthy blend of both in what little is known of their ways and culture. There was evidence to suggest the Wilderlands and southern Shamaa were a part of the loose Taroc-Shamaa border before Rekōdo was founded. But that was long ago and the people of Rekōdo had a short memory, possibly because everything was recorded for them. Technically, she knew, anyone of the southern clans who lived, if they still lived, within the Wilderlands did not affiliate themselves with any of the Provinces. What made her hands pause was the mention of his music and the magikal potency it had. Her brown eyes glanced at Doraen from beneath illumined lashes. A hint of their true, brown color could be seen beneath the glowing white light, but that gaze is turned back on the unconscious Second. Merelin seemed to disappear deeper beneath the pureness of the white light that radiated so softly from her fingertips.

"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face and a grey dawn breaking."
    *

Merelin's voice was light and airy as she healed Arion. Her voice, but a whisper to the room, would ring purely for Arion and Doraen to hear. The stitching of bones and sinews by her own hand seemed to grow faster and more efficient. The bleeding was staunched and the shallow breathing of the lanky Second seemed to calm. Her voice continued to sing, of a woman waiting on the shores of Taroc for her love to come home from the sea, where he forever wandered. The sailors were trying to find their way back home again, across the ocean and a woman waited on the windy, cliff-shores of northwestern Taroc, of Caios by the Sea. Her voice was light and lilting, very soft and tender as her hands moved over Arion. Doraen's runes began to alter in color and seriousness and when words ran out, Merelin continued to hum, breaking the old ballad to speak quietly to Doraen as she worked.

"Comfort, not just magik, is needed to heal. Compassion. The man of the South likes music, so it is music that shall help him to heal. That song will stay with him now and be a tune for his mind to grasp if all others fail him."

Arion's face was still pale when Merelin finished, but the deathly shade had left his features. She had promised Eri she would not overextend herself, in her oaths to him as his personal guard. It was with great gentleness that Merelin allowed the light to leave her eyes and hands and it was with a sigh that she stood back from the red-haired Second. Merelin gave the doctor a small, slightly drained smile.

"I hope I was of use to you, doctor. May the rest of your endeavors be not in vain."

Merelin rose slowly and smoothly before returning to the Prince. He watched her as she drew nearer to him, but said nothing to reveal how much of herself she had given to the Second of Taroc. But his eyes were inquiring and Merelin whispered an exchange with the Prince quietly. There was a look of small relief on Eri's face before the sternness took hold again. Ganard's look was more questioning as he showed a small, deliberate window of disapproval toward Merelin.

*John Masefield's 'Salt-Water Ballads.' (1902, London). This one is called 'Sea-Fever.' A (male-sung) version of it is here. For the sake of her gentleness, Merelin would sing it much, much slower and very softly.

Attachment 1674The BBC announced that Matt Smith is leaving the role of Doctor Who with the Christmas Special later this year.

Matt Smith says: "Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.

Having Steven Moffat as show runner write such varied, funny, mind bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career. It's been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he's a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor.

The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I've never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I'm back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special!

It's been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one'. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys. Matt."

Steven Moffat adds: "Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he'd turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next. The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently. And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him - sometimes literally - his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor.

But great actors always know when it's time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt - bow ties were never cooler.

Of course, this isn't the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now - all unknowing, just going about their business - is someone who's about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years, that's still so exciting!"

The 11th doctor has only two more shows left to do. The 50th anniversary special on November 23, 2013 and the Christmas special.

Some would like to see David Tennant return and others have pointed out that John Hurt is set to appear in more episodes. Could he be the new Doctor?

Who do you think should be the new Doctor?

NCSoft in the past said it had a small team working on a possible console version but now has possibly confirmed that Guild Wars 2 is coming to a console. In an investor call, the publisher said when asked about a console version, that "When it comes to Guild Wars 2 as we have announced already, we are in the preparation stage."

Although later a ArenaNet representative clarified that "Currently ArenaNet is focused on making GW2 the best PC MMO ever released."

So it is not clear if it is coming to the consoles or not. Was the clarification meant to throw off competitors? Or are they really not planning to bring a console version.

In 2007 NCSoft, inked a deal with Sony to provide exclusive games to the PSP and Playstation 3. If that deal is in effect, any console version would only be available on Sony's platforms.

Attachment 1673ArenaNet's free update for Guild Wars 2 expands the tropical island that was just introduced into the game earlier this month. So ArenaNet has released a second batch of content offered this month which is unusual.

Players can expect a new enemy, the underground Canarch, who plan to unleash a new monster to wreck havoc on the island and there will be new abilities added for group scrimmages and some cosmetic changes.

Unlike other games, it is not a subscription based game nor a free game. Instead people buy the game and then they can make in game purchases to enhance the cosmetics of their characters. ArenaNet keeps players interested with dynamic story events and free monthly expansions.

Attachment 1672Hasbro announced they have partnered with DeNA to release Dungeons and Dragons: Arena of War for the iPhone, Ipad, and Android devices. Tiburcio De la Carcova, Head of DeNA’s Santiago, Chile game studio, said, "The 'D&D' 5th edition is coming soon and now is the best moment to be the part of the new era of 'Dungeons and Dragons.' There was also no 'D&D' game truly designed for mobile devices and the community was clearly waiting for that."

The game will feature fantasy classes such as Rogues and Wizards, races such as Dwarves and Elves, and the quest to slay enemies. "The majority of the development team is comprised of 'D&D' fans, so it was really important for us to create an authentic 'D&D' gameplay experience. We are working very closely with the Wizards of the Coast team to be faithful to 'D&D'," said De la Carcova.

De la Carcova said that Arena can be played casually but there is a deepness to the game to keep the D&D fan interested. "You can play it hack and slash style, but if you really want to be on top of the leaderboards you will invest a lot of time developing your character and your party."

Mortenson was asked by one of the producers in 2008 if he would be interested in appearing in the Hobbit. He didn't want to take the part out of respect to the original author and told the producer that he knew that Aragorn wasn't in the Hobbit. And that there was a 60 year difference between the books.

He admitted that he's yet to see the first Hobbit film but said he is intrigued by what Jackson can do with the source material.

"I'm interested in seeing that world again, and seeing what Peter Jackson's done, how he's made use of the improvements in special effects and cameras and the different way of shooting, which will probably enhance the visual aspect of the experience, the sound also,"

Mortensen explained. "And I'm interested in seeing how he's managed to make three movies out of a relatively slim volume … Jackson is a clever person – I'm sure he'll have done something really interesting with it."

The Desolation of Smaug is due to come out December 2013 and the final film There and Back Again will follow in December 2014.

Looking forward to these films? Think Mortensen was right to turn down the role?

One is Terminator 5, the other is a Conan movie that Universal is doing and there’s the sequel to Twins, which is called Triplets."

Patrick Lussier and Laeta Kalogidis are writing the script for Terminator 5. It is to be produced by Skydance Productions and Annapuma Pictures.

The Legend of Conan is said to be a direct sequel to 1984's Conan the Barbarian. It does not plan to include either Conan the Destroyer or the 2011 Conan the Barbarian in its timeline.

Attachment 1667News that Warner Brothers has aquired the rights to make a moved based on Dungeons and Dragons may not be true after all. Hasbro, owners of Wizards of Coast, has filed a lawsuit to stop the planned move claiming that it has not authorized the movie. Instead, Wizards has an agreement with Universal pictures.Earlier this month, the news said that Warner Brothers already has a script from David Leslie Johnson. Johnson wrote Wrath of the Titans and Red Riding Hood. The script, Chainmill, is based on a game designed by Gary Gygax before he launched Dungeons and Dragons.

The film was to be produced by Roy Lee and Courtney Solomon, who directed the 2000 Dungeons and Dragons film starring Jeremy Irons. With Alan Zeman being the executive Producer of the project. Solomon's studio claims it has the right to make a sequel or prequel to the 2000 film.

The Dungeons and Dragons brand that has generated over $1 billion dollars since it launched in 1974 and the news claimed that Warner Brothers is treating this property as a major priority. They hoped to catch the interest of those who are enjoying the HBO series Game of Thrones and those who enjoy the Peter Jackson Hobbit adaptations.

But Hasbro has filed a lawsuit against Solomon's Sweatpea Entertainment alleging that it has no right to make a film that exploits the Dungeon and Dragon brand. It seeks a declaration that it owns the rights to the property and wants an injunction to stop the planned Warner Brothers film. Warner Brothers is not a defendant in the lawsuit.

Further the complaint states that the sequel rights would revert on a rolling basis on the earlier of five years from the U.S. release or seven years from the final director's cut.

Sweatpea meanwhile has produced two TV films for the SyFy Channel: Wrath of the Dragon God in 2005 and The Book of Vile Darkness in 2012. They claim that this reset the sequel rights five year reversion clock but the Hasbro lawsuit claims that since it was not released as a theaterical release it did not.

We have made three pictures so far, and we’re going to make more -
including the tentpole project that is currently in advanced stages of development with Warner Bros," says Solomon in a statement.

I've been getting a lot of automated emails from the site about errors being generated. My new job has been keeping me beyond busy, and I haven't had time to visit much lately, but when I do come to check recent threads, things seem to be running ok at that time.

I wanted to start a thread to hear from others, to see how the site has been running, and determine if I need to upgrade something on the server to make it perform better. Please respond in this thread and let me know what your experiences with the site have been recently, and I'll make a decision on what to do by the end of the month.

In my effort to keep everyone up-to-date on the status of the site and the server we are hosting on, I wanted to let you know exactly where we stand.

As I had mentioned in a previous article, everything has been moved to the new server. On Tuesday, I turned off the old server, which was costing $100 per month. I have moved us to a cloud based server that has a variable monthly rate based on resources that are required. My original hope was for running the $40 per month plan, which was for 1 CPU, 512MB RAM, and 40GB drive. Unfortunately, the memory setting was way too low, so I had to upgrade it to 1GB of RAM, which is what brought it to the $50 I was reporting in my original messages.

On the 1st, I was forced to upgrade from 1GB of RAM to 2GB of RAM, as the server performance was still too sluggish. This now brings the total cost of the server to $75 per month, which is still less than the $100 per month that I was paying on the old dedicated server.

I do not anticipate any other changes to the server, as the memory is now more than sufficient (I'm running between 60%-80% usage) and I have more than enough harddrive space. Therefore, the $75 per month is what I will be paying.

Thanks to the support of many of you here, as of today, the PayPal account that pays for the server is at $330. The charge for the server comes on the first of every month, so we are good for another four months (July, August, September, October). In September, another site that I host on the server will be paying their annual fee, which will carry the server an additional three months (November, December, January).

So, I want to personally thank everyone who has been able to help, no matter how small it was. I am still looking for a job, and am hoping to have one soon. At least we can be secure knowing that the server is covered for a while longer at least. I am still accepting any donations or subscriptions you might be able to provide. Rest assured that everything that comes in to PayPal always goes back to the server and the maintenance of the site.
